Jean Holt Obituary

Lula Jean Mecham Holt was born the second oldest of eight children to Joseph Hyrum and Agnes Mathews Mecham on July 21, 1937 in Yost, Utah. She passed away at the age of 81 on September 28, 2018 at the Uintah Care Center.

Jean was a tough woman and prided herself on her independence and pull-up-her-bootstraps attitude. She was the oldest girl in her family and given a great deal of responsibility in raising her younger siblings as well as helping out with the household and farm chores. She learned the importance of hard work and its value from a very young age.

She met and married the love of her life, Lester C Holt, when was only 16 years old. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 8, 1964. They were blessed with two children: Leslie Jean and Jefferson Craig.

During Jean and Lesters marriage, they lived in Texas, Wyoming, New Mexico, and eventually settled in Vernal, Utah.

Jean faced a great deal of tragedy in her life. Her son, Jeff, was killed in a tractor accident when he was only 13 years old. Three years later, her husband, Lester, died in a black powder plant explosion. As a young widow, she worked hard to support her daughter and to finance building her home on her own. Because she had married at such a young age, she was not able to finish high school and receive a diploma, but she proudly received her GED in her 40s. She regretted not having a formal education, but she was an avid reader and a life-long learner. She always encouraged her grandchildren to learn and receive as much education as possible. She worked for First Security for several years, and then worked for The Department of Workforce Services where she eventually retired.

Jean was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served faithfully in Primary, Sunday School, Relief Society, Cub Scouts, Young Women and as a temple worker in the Vernal Utah Temple. She commented often that her faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ is what helped her through the difficult times. She had a strong testimony of the gospel and loved to read and study the scriptures. She also enjoyed doing genealogy.

She has always been the responsible matriarch of her family. Her home was often a place of refuge and comfort to her loved ones. She served her brothers and sisters with love and care. She doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as her many nieces and nephews. She honored her blessed roles of daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend with great strength, perseverance and courage. Jean is loved by many and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the Uintah Care Center for the care that was given Jean and also Hazel May Crosby and Joseph and Amber Harrison for taking care of Jean when it was so needed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Hyrum and Agnes Mathews Mecham; her husband, Lester C Holt; her son, Jefferson Craig Holt; her siblings, Joseph Curtis Mecham, Hyrum Jae Mecham, James Warren Mecham, Edith Lorraine Mecham Christensen and Zeary Dee Mecham.

She is survived by her daughter Leslie; son-in-saw, Roger Lee Harrison; and two siblings: Alice LaDee Mecham Christensen (Gerald) and Jerry Lee Mecham; as well as her 7 grandchildren Jessie Lynn Harrison Bowers (Jacob Mark), Jedadiah Lester Harrison (Brook L Batty), Jacob Daniel Harrison(Danni Leigh Anderton), Jefferson Lee Harrison (Alex James Tolaas), James Lyle Harrison (Camela Dawn Merkley), Jennie La Rae Harrison Karren (Travis Alan), Joseph Levi Harrison (Amber Nichele Smith); 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
