Norman Long Obituary

Norman Winfred Long returned to his Heavenly Father and loving wife Joyce on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the age of 95. He was living at the Vernal Beehive home at the time of his death.

Norman was born on March 6, 1926, in Ft. Duchesne, Utah to Winfred and Delma Long. He graduated from Alterra High School. He married his sweetheart Joyce Bigelow in the Salt Lake Temple on September 8, 1948. Together they had three children, Jana, Sheryl, and Devan.

Norman was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and Army. He served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 during WWII. He returned and went to Utah State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Arts. He was a member of the ROTC while attending Utah State and was called to serve in the US Army during the Korean War in Japan from 1951 to 1953 and was honorably discharged from active duty.

After returning to the Uintah Basin, Norman began teaching at Duchesne High School which led him on a path of teaching opportunities throughout Duchesne and Uintah Counties while completing his Master's Degree in Education Administration. His 30-year education career ended in Manila, Utah, Daggett County, as School Superintendent.

Norman had a profound love of education both in his professional career and in his personal life. He was always teaching his children and grandchildren the value of education and taught them life's lessons regularly by his example. His passion was in agriculture and raising quality cattle and horses. He had a love for the land and found beauty in all things. As a successful rancher, he always left things better than he found them. You could often find him out working on the farm or watching a good football game. Norman was a wonderful father and grandfather. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and took an interest in each of their lives.

Norman was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many leadership positions in the church.

Norman is survived by his children, Jana (Mike) Walker, Sheryl (Terell) Collett and Devan (Wendi) Long all of Vernal; 17 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren; sisters Beverly (Wayne) Cantwell of Logan Utah and Larain Mobley of Neola Utah. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Joyce Bigelow Long, his parents, several siblings, and grandson Taylor Norman Collett.

Norman's family would like to thank Naples and Vernal Beehive Homes, Canyon Home Health, and Ashley Valley Funeral Home for all their care, love, and support.
