Charles Powell

Charles Kelly Powell, 85, was called home to his Heavenly Father on May 14, 2013, at the Ashley Regional Medical Center as a result of pulmonary fibrosis.


Kelly was born January 4, 1928, in Vernal, Utah to Ruth Olive Gray and John Powell. He grew up on his father's cattle ranch in Ashley. The ranch is part of the 19th century homestead belonging to Kelly's grandfather, William Swinford Powell, a Vernal pioneer.


He was the 4th of 8 children. He went to Ashley Elementary and eventually graduated from Uintah High School in 1946.


In September 1950 he was drafted into the Army in the Korean Conflict. He was sent to Germany in 1951. He was discharged from a two year, two day tour of duty and enjoyed every day of military service. While in the military he was converted to the church and on February 28, 1953, he was baptized and confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.


On June 10, 1953, he married Nita Slaugh the marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on March 3, 1954. They raised a family of seven daughters and 2 sons. He also raised three of his sister's children. In 1987 Kelly lost his beloved Nita to cancer.


On April 6, 1989 Kelly married Colleen Colton and they have shared a wonderful life of 24 years together. Colleen had five children that Kelly loved dearly. Kelly and Colleen loved to fish, hunt, and spend time with one another.


Kelly loved to work on the ranch raising cattle, and working on the farm. He also worked for 35 years in the Gilsonite mines. Kelly loved his membership in the church and served in many capacities'. He loved serving others, was honest, kind and respectful to everyone he met.


Kelly is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth; his daughters Doris Jean Powell and Diane Powell Morton; his wife Nita Slaugh Powell; his brothers John (Jack) William Powell and Keith (Thelma) Powell; and his sisters Dorothy (Bob) Pearson and Alice (Bill) Lewis, grandchildren: BrendaKa Sheffer, Lance Bascom, and Brett Bascom.


Kelly is survived by his wife Colleen of Vernal, UT; sons and daughters: John Martinof Dutch John, UT, KaLynn (Brent) Sheffer of Jensen, UT, Carma (Larry) Werner of St. George, UT, Kathy (Jose) Quinto of Vernal, UT, Shelly (Steward) Kauwe of Cheney, WA, Vicky (Brian) O'Toole of Idaho Falls, ID, Kelly Duane (Jan) Powell of Jensen, UT, David (Micki) Powell of Vernal, UT, Barbara (Steve) White of Roosevelt, UT, Darrell (Ann) Lewis of Price, UT, Michelle (Mike) Covington of Yakama, WA, and Nikell (Cloyd) Eaton of Vernal, UT; his step children: Carma Rae (Dennis) Bascom, Bruce (Marilynn) Colton, Julie (Byron) Harvey, Daryl (Sylena) Colton and Tamra (Ralph) Baty; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Funeral Services were held Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Jensen Chapel (8775 East 6000 South) at 2:30 P.M. A viewing was held Friday evening from 6~8 P.M. at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home and Saturday 1:15-2:15 P.M. at the church. Burial was in the Jensen Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion and the Utah National Guard. Services were under direction of the Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
