Harley Robert Hales, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving children on April 11, 2026, in Roosevelt, Utah, at the age of 88.
Harley was born on June 16, 1937, in Pleasant Grove, Utah, to Clifford C. Hales and Dora Oscarson. As the oldest of six children, he developed an early sense of responsibility, leadership, and devotion to family that would remain with him throughout his life.
From a young age, Harley embraced life to the fullest. He was actively involved in school-especially in music, theater, and dance-and excelled in athletics. He loved sports and participated in football, basketball, tennis, track, and baseball, bringing enthusiasm and energy to everything he did.
Harley's greatest love began in childhood, when he met his first-grade sweetheart, Gay Farr. Their love endured, and they were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on October 30, 1957. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and love and were blessed with five children. They made their home in Vernal, Utah, where Harley lived for 60 years.
As a devoted father, Harley taught his children to cherish life, especially through time spent outdoors. He had a deep appreciation for nature and found joy in helping his family recognize the beauty of God's creations.
Harley attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. He worked in both public and private accounting and finished his career as the Finance Director for Vernal City. Throughout his career, he was known for his integrity, diligence, and strong work ethic. He left a lasting legacy, inspiring many of his posterity to follow in his footsteps in the accounting field.
He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. He especially loved working with the Young Men and Scouts, sharing his love of the outdoors. He also served in the Vernal Utah Temple as a temple recorder, where his quiet dedication and love for the Lord were evident.
Harley had a deep love for his country and completed advanced training at Fort Bragg as a member of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces Division. After his service, he continued in the Utah National Guard for several years. He also gave back to his community through his involvement in the Uintah County Search and Rescue, demonstrating his willingness to serve others and help in times of need. Civic duty was important in Harley's life, and he was involved in the Lions Club, Uintah County Republican Party leadership, and the Chamber of Commerce.
Harley is survived by his children: Carolyn Pace (Jim), Brent Hales (Darcy), Suzanne Hales (Audrey), and Sally Atkinson (Cornell); 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and his brothers Don, Mark, and Jay.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gay Farr Hales; his daughter, Pam Davis; his son-in-law, Kerry Davis; his parents, Clifford and Dora Hales; his sister, Judy Tingey; his brother, Steven Hales; and his four great-grandchildren, Tace, Jori, Nora, and Navy. We find comfort in knowing that Harley has been joyfully reunited with his loved ones.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the kind and compassionate caregivers at The Villa in Roosevelt, Utah, for the loving support and attention given to Harley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Ashley Valley Funeral Home in Vernal, Utah (410 North 800 West). A viewing will be held at 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at the Rock Point Cemetery.
Harley will be remembered for his love of life, his contagious smile, his optimistic outlook, his sense of humor, his unwavering devotion to his family, and his example of faith, service, and gratitude. His legacy lives on in the lives of those he loved and taught.
"Until we meet again."
