John Christian Urry

October 9, 1980 — February 5, 2024

Vernal

John Christian Urry was born October 9th, 1980, in San Diego, California. When he was born, he was given the name Stephen but when adopted, his name was changed to John because there were already two Stephens in the household. John Christian was his adopted father's favorite name. John was born with Spina Bifida, club feet, no muscle in the left stomach, and wall-eyed. Kathy, his adopted mother, had had a vision where he came to her afraid that no one would take him when he was born. His birth mother was a sweet 16-year-old girl and couldn't take care of him, so he was placed for adoption. After the vision Kathy went to the next-door neighbor who was the Director (Stan) of the LDS Social Services in Detroit where the Urry's were living at the time. She asked Stan if there were any baby boys that had come across the Churches database. The Director (Stan) indicated there was not any adoption showing up in his database, but he would check and see. He didn't think there would be any, however. Kathy asked him to check anyway because she knew there was another baby coming to the family. Stan came home that night and rushed over to tell Kathy about John being born in San Diego California. He indicated that we'd have to jump through hoops because there were two other families that wanted to adopt him. Steve and Kathy jumped through the hoops and travelled to San Diego to get him. John has outlived all his friends with Spina Bifida except one, Beth Bryant, and has lived longer than anyone expected. John loves people, music, and writing. His going to Church every week has been his big outlet. In Louisville Kentucky where the family moved from, John had so many friends in the Spina Bifida Association. He would also go to the movies 3 times a week, which he loved. When moving to Vernal, he had to make new friends, which he did quickly. John loved everyone in Vernal. John loved writing and singing. He has written many poems and parodies and loved singing and recording them with his friend Lisa Neal. John graduated from Manuel High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He served a mission in the Mission Office of the Louisville Kentucky Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He wrote several poems about the missionaries there and became close friends with many of them. John passed away February 5th at about 6:30 in the morning. He had ongoing problems for a month which had escalated and ended with a Heart Attack. John is survived by his parents Stephen and Katherine Urry, his brother Stephen Jr (Linda, wife), David, Joshua. And Robert. His Sisters Melinda, White (Lon, husband), Amy Smith (Trevor, husband) and Sara. He was preceded in death by a sister Laura.
