Johnnie Joe Mahaney

Johnnie Joe Mahaney (65) was born on December 20, 1960, in Rifle, Colorado. His parents, Johnnie Eugene Mahaney and Violet Elaine Mahaney, preceded him in death and welcomed him home on June 16, 2026.

In his younger years, Johnnie was a skilled golfer and many people in the Basin knew him as one of the best, often remarking that he could have gone professional with his beloved hobby. Johnnie was humble, though, and simply enjoyed having his nephews alongside him out on the local course, teaching them with his patient and gentle demeanor.

Johnnie also enjoyed and had a special connection with nature. He spent time camping and fishing and was an explorer and collector at heart. He spent time prospecting, woodworking, tinkering with old vehicles, and making beautiful pieces of jewelry and stained glass. He was a creative artisan, utilizing what he found. He often had knowledge to share with family about rocks and jewels, old coins, and precious metals. He was thoughtful and kind and offered love through unique gifts imbued with his creativity.

Johnnie was reserved and soft spoken, but he nevertheless left a strong, positive impact on our hearts. His humor was subtle and witty, which made it that much more wonderful. His nieces and nephews remember nicknames that he would come up with for them, and the stories he would tell from their younger childhoods. He also loved animals and was surely greeted in heaven by many of his beloved pets who passed before him. His presence will forever be felt through the trees and the rocks and the stained-glass pieces he created for us. You are a sweet and precious soul, Johnnie, and always in our hearts. We love you.

Johnnie is survived by his: sister, Kim Mahaney Haslem; brother Patrick Eugene Mahaney; stepson Philip Neville; nieces and nephews: Nikki, Kray, Trevor, Dexter, Danielle, Lynsie, Luke, Britney, Korby, CaitLee, and Zachary; and great-grandnieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held in nature to honor Johnnie's life this Autumn. His wish was for his ashes to be scattered in the mountains he loved. Details will be sent to family and friends in the coming months.
