Kathleen Marie (Gurr) Underwood

Kathleen Marie Gurr (Kathy Underwood) passed away on November 1st, 2024 at the age of 77. Kathy was born on October 24th, 1947 to Lawrence and Zora Gurr at the then, new Uintah County Hospital in Vernal Utah. She lived in Bonanza until she was 9 years old where she remembered 'playing games by streetlight'. She was baptized into the Church of Latter Day Saints on November 5th 1955 and then confirmed on November the 6th of the same year. The family then moved to Vernal in 1957 where she helped her mother run the Trail Cafe on Main street in Vernal by the 7-11 Ranch Restaurant through her high school years. She graduated high school from Uintah High in the summer of 1965. Kathy married Roger Underwood on May 10th, 1968. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Roger asked Kathy out after he carded her while working at a grocery store. Kathy went in to buy cigarettes for brothers as the story goes, and their first date was on August 24th 1967 - 'we went to the show'. Their second date was to the state fair and Roger proposed that winter on December 24, 1967. Their first child Karyl was born August 21st, 1969 and they went on to have 3 more children, Jennifer, Bryan, and Robert. Roger's career took them to the Seattle area in 1980. The weekend the family moved north happened to be the same weekend, the same day even, that Mt St Helens erupted - May 18th 1980. That story was often reminisced among the family. The Seattle area was home for the next 42 years. Kathy worked a full time office job while raising her 4 children. Kathy enjoyed bowling in her early years traveling all over the country for various league tournaments. Sewing and crocheting were some of her other hobbies. Most of her children and or grand children received handmade blankets or unique stuffed dinosaurs as gifts at birth. Kathy was tough, she was a proud breast cancer survivor, supportive mother, and loving wife. In her golden years, Roger and her traveled the world. Her refrigerator was covered top to bottom with magnets from all of the countries, and states they saw. It was also covered in photos and artwork of her grandchildren. She loved her children and grandchildren. Kathy was the type of person that would give you her last dollar. She'd give you the shirt off her back. She was kind and loving and will be missed. Kathy moved back to Vernal after Roger passed in May of 2022 where she lived out her final days. She is survived by her children Karyl Howard, Jennifer Cardinalli, Bryan Underwood, and Robert Underwood and their respective family members. She is also survived by Ione Koukoulias, Carolyn Wiseman, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Kathy is preceded in death by her husband Roger Underwood, her parents Lawrence and Zora Gurr, Ernal and Elthora Underwood, Parley Sheldon, and Larry (Bear), Gurr, her sister in law, Lorraine Knorr, her cousins, nieces, and nephews. Services will be held November 16th 2024 1:00PM MST at 60 South Main Street Salem, UT 84653. Visitation viewing will be held 11:45 - 12:45 as well as on November 14th 2024 6:00-8:00pm MST at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home 410 North 800 West Vernal, UT 84078.
