Max Stewart

Our precious, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in law, and dear friend, Max Stewart, went to be with Lord Jesus Christ and his loved ones on October 26, 2019, at his residence surrounded by his loving children. We have lost a beautiful, colorful character and friend; but heaven gained him. He was born March 8, 1929, in Vernal, Utah, to Guy Ramsey Stewart and Amanda Jane Hatch. He was a member of the US Naval Reserve and the National Guard. He graduated from Uintah High School in 1947. After graduating from high school, his mother borrowed $20 from a friend for him to travel to Provo, Utah, in search of work. He found work at a lumber yard, Geneva Steel, Provo Plumbing and Heating, the State Mental Institution, and Utah Poultry. He left with $20, never to return to live at his home again. After returning to Vernal, and many part-time jobs later (projectionist at the Vogue Theater, posting billboards, Fashion Cleaners delivery boy, post office 2 hrs./day, and Western Jewelers), he went to work full time at the local U.S. Post Office, advancing from city carrier to superintendent of postal operations. He retired after 34 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Lewis in 1948. They were head over heels in love with each other, and got married without a penny to their name, going on their honeymoon to SLC in a car with no brakes. They made a loving home and raised a daughter and son in a golden time that well never see the likes of again. Together they touched many people in a very-positive way. Their home was a warm, welcome retreat for many. Max had many hobbies: fly fishing (caught a 25 lb. fish out of the Green River when he was only 8 years old), traditional archery, hunting, photography, skiing, flying, Karate, chess, ballroom dancing, camping, and writing. He was self-taught from reading books and loved to share his interests and passions with all he knew. He was a scoutmaster for 6 years, and Order of the Arrow scout advisor for 3 years. He took his scouts over the High Uintas and down the green river on a white-water adventure through the Gates of Ladore Canyon. He was a member of many civic organizations such as Jaycees, Kiwanis, Rotary Club, and Elks. He was a founding member of the Red Cloud Bowmens Archery Club, and later a member of the Split Mountain Archery Club. Max loved and was loved by his close dear friends and family. His legacy will live on through the lives of those who knew him. His faithfulness and love of God is such a testimony for all who were acquainted him. He was wise, fun-loving, a colorful story teller, quick witted, and loved a good practical joke or prank. Max is a born-again Christian and a faithful witness of Jesus Christ. He became a child of God in 1983, (John 1:12, But as many as received Him, to them gave power to become children of God, even them who believe in His name.) Max is survived by his children Merridy (Butch) Sevy, Preston Max, granddaughters Megan Renae (Scott) Fritton, Kalli Joy (Matt) Corbin, great-grandchildren Mattix Paul Corbin, Grace Amaryah Corbin, Josiah Daniel Fritton, Nathan Max Fritton, and sister Lora (Lyle) Martinsen. He is preceded in death by his parents Amanda (Ramsey) Stewart, Ramsey Stewart, brother Dale Stewart, wife Patricia (Max) Stewart, daughter-in law Kathy Freestone (Preston) Stewart, and great- granddaughter CiCi Corbin. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
