Nelson James Marshall passed away on March 17, 2026, at the age of 97. Nelson was born on July 19, 1928, to Florence Ruth Hansen and Calvin Filmore Marshall in Vernal, Utah. Nelson married Eleanor Rose Sargent on March 2, 1951, in St George, Utah.
Nelson enjoyed many hobbies including wood working, painting, music, reading, boating, hiking, traveling, electronics and technology. He had many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in Sunday school, the Bishopric and the High Council. He was elected to the School Board and served as the County Surveyor for 35 years. He had a long and successful career as a Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor. He was the co-founder and president of Uintah Engineering and Land Surveying for many years and with partners grew it to be the thriving business it is today.
Nelson served as unit commander of 1337 Aviation Engineer in the Army Corp of Engineers and Unit commander of 1331 combat Engineers before serving as captain of the local National Guard. He earned special recognition as a marksman with .45 caliber pistol.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years Eleanor Rose Sargent, his children; Patricia, Jacqueline, and Harold. His grandchildren; Samantha, Eric, Dallin, Kassandra, Jessica, Aaron, Klisa, Jeremy and Kyle. Two great grandsons; Benton and Haddon, two brothers; Calvin and John and three sisters; Doris, Rita and Carolyn.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Childs (brother), and Sandon Rylee Marshall (grandson).
Funeral services for Eleanor Rose Marshall age, 95, and Nelson James Marshall, age 97, of Vernal will be held Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at 2:00PM at the Maeser 7th Ward Chapel (2745 West 1000 North). A visitation will be held Monday evening from 6-8PM at the Phillips Ashley Valley Funeral Home and Tuesday 12:45-1:45PM at the Church. Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park with Military Honors by the American Legion Post 11.
