Paul Bryan Gustin

Paul Bryan Gustin returned to his Heavenly home on November 11, 2023, after a long and valiant fight with cancer. He was a remarkable man who always seemed to know someone and remember events in their life so he could start a conversation with them. His family often referred to him as the Mayor of Nowhere... or Everywhere. Paul was born in Ogden, UT in 1965 to Mervin and Betty Gustin. He attended elementary school in Richfield, and Jr High in Layton. Paul attended Davis High School and graduated from Duchesne High School. He studied electronics and graduated from Salt Lake Community College and worked as a Telecommunications Technician for the State of Utah, retiring after 28 years. He was a hard worker and he loved his work. He enjoyed both the people he worked with, and those 'customers' that he worked for forming long lasting friendships with Officers, Dispatchers, and others. He will always testify of the importance of attending seminary. It was only one class for him in ninth grade but he met his sweetheart and eternal companion Laurie. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 8, 1985, and just celebrated 38 years of marriage. Paul's life was filled with more joy and happiness (and maybe a little stress) with the addition of three children. Family was everything to Paul and we enjoyed many years of working, camping, and playing together. Paul and Laurie raised their family in South Jordan, Utah, and stayed there for 35 years before moving to Vernal in 2022. With the growing family and addition of grandchildren there was never anyone as happy to be Papa. He treasured his time with his grandkids and loved watching them play sports or dance, or whatever. They loved visiting Papa and riding the 4-wheeler around the driveway or getting rides in the tractor bucket. Paul loved running. He ran several marathons and loved the freedom and exhilaration of running in the early morning on a cold day. He would run at home, while working out of town, and even on vacation (and camping!) He often talked about running through Vernal when he was working out here and the bank temperature said -16 degrees. Cold!! Paul also loved hunting and fishing. He would tell many stories of fishing as a child, how cold it was when he went ice fishing on Strawberry, or getting that big buck., or even the fun he had scaring his brother on a trail. Most of all, Paul had a testimony of his Savior. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served others in many ways. During the years after his diagnosis, his testimony grew. He formed a real and tangible relationship with his Heavenly Father and Savior and wanted others to feel the love that he felt. He served faithfully, shared his testimony, and touched countless numbers of people with his genuine love and concern. Paul is survived by his wife Laurie, Children: Brianna Lynn (Gregory) Hale, Dirinda Sue (Bradley) Morris and Bryan Lane Gustin, 5 grandchildren. His parents: Mervin and Betty Gustin and Siblings: Dixie (Ron) Brandt, Molly (Jason) Tolbert, and Lonnie (Yvonne) Gustin. Funeral services for Paul will be held Saturday November 18, 2023 at 12:00pm at the Maeser 7th Ward LDS Chapel (2745 West 1000 North). Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday from 6:00pm ~ 8:00pm at the Phillips Ashley Valley Funeral Home and Saturday from 10:30am ~ 11:45am at the church. Interment in the Rockpoint Cemetery under the direction of the Phillips Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
