Randle Kent Lane was born in Amhurst, Texas on May 22, 1952 to Ruth and Sidney Lane. Very few people ever knew his first name was Randle. He only went by Kent.
During his early childhood he lived in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. Each state several times because his family moved with the oilfield work. Kent was always into some kind of mischief like catching snakes for his sister to take to school or accidentally chasing his mom out of the house with his pet muskrat. In his early teen years, he and his friends graduated from animal antics to dropping their stuffed dummy off the top of the post office and flying a cardboard spaceship from the flagpole of the Catholic church. Yes, the police knew Kent and his friends by name, although back then it was considered harmless pranks by crazy kids.
After he graduated Kent met and married Donna Williams; they had one daughter Amber and then later divorced. He then met and married Shelly Cook. Kent adored her son Denim and adopted him as his own. They also had a son whom dad insisted on naming him Last Chance because he was dad's last chance for a little boy. A deal was struck and it was settled as L. Chance Lane. Kent and Shelly also later divorced.
Kent was an amazing person. Some knew him as an ornery, hermit-like man. Others knew him as a good friend and a great mechanic. He worked as a mechanic for Target Trucking for almost 30 years.
To his kids he was our daddy, dad, and friend. He may not have expressed his love verbally, but he was always there for us when we needed him. He taught us how to hunt, fish, and how to love a good rainstorm with lightning. He also taught his grandkids, who were the apples of his eye, how to love candy, especially Hershey kisses and popcorn. He would pop fresh popcorn and send it across country UPS to his granddaughter, Savannah when she and her family lived in Nebraska. He found beauty in the simplest things and always shared that with his family.
Dad, we will never forget you, and we will keep an eye on the lightning for you until we see you again.
Kent is survived by his children and their spouses: Amber (Jeremy) Harrison, Chance (Ashley) Lane, and Denim (Christy) Lane; Grandkids: Savannah, Shaylene, and Kimbrie Harrison; Akara Lane, and Gabriel, Ashley, and Alex Lane.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Debra Lane and Gretchen Lane, and brother S.W. Lane.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Ashley Valley Funeral Home, 410 North 800 West, in Vernal. Burial took place in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Ashley Valley Funeral Home.
