Darrel Dean Smuin, age 87, passed away on March 29, 2022 surrounded by his family. Darrel was born on July 12, 1934 to Hyrum and Marvel Smuin in Vernal, Utah. He was the first of four children. Darrel married Shirley on October 15, 1955 in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1962. They have been married for 66 years. They have lived in Vernal all their life. The past 63 years they have lived in the Davis area.
Darrel loved spending time at his cabin on Diamond Mountain and hunting in the Marshall Draw. The hunting and camping continued in Hanna. Early in their marriage he couldn't get time off, so he quit his job to go hunting. Hunting was always a top priority, and he has passed that on to all his family.
He enjoyed following his grandkids and great grandkids in sports and loved watching the boys rope. He loved to farm, garden and could fix almost anything. His grandkids thought he was a "fountain of knowledge."
He worked at several jobs including saw mill, Escalante Ranch, gilsonite mine, oilfield and at Simplot for 37 years. He retired in 1998.
His membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has allowed him to serve in many positions. He served in the Temple for eight years.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; children: Curt (Tracie) Smuin, Janet (Rick) Zufelt, Stacy (Joe) Wiseman, Rhett (Laci) Smuin, all of Vernal; 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; siblings: Jimmy (Barbara) Smuin and Judy (Gary) Jensen.
He is preceded in death by his parents Hyrum and Marvel Smuin; and brother Floyd Smuin.
