Jack Horner Obituary
The Family of Jack Lee Horner, age 84, of Lapoint mourns his passing on November 23, 2019, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.
He was born in Hays, Kansas on April 9, 1935, to Rufus (Jack) and Viola Horner. He attended school in Hays. At age 11, along with his parents and four sisters and two brothers, Jack moved to Ellis Kansas, where he completed his education.
Jacks early Midwestern experiences would shape him as a man and would serve him well throughout his life, characterized by; a strong work ethic, perseverance, integrity, love for his family, love for his country, respect for his fellow man, and reverence for God.
Jack married Terri Roy in Plainville, Kansas. The marriage was blessed with two children. That married was later dissolved. Jack later married the true love of his life, Dorothy (Duke) Horner in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 3, 1974.
Jack served as a member of the Kansas Army National Guard and later also served in the US Army from April 1952 until October 1960 as a Radar System Operator. He felt a very strong commitment to serve his country, after all Jack came from a long line of soldiers and Patriots. He was the son, grandson, brother, and nephew of men who all served their country in the US Army in time of war.
He worked for decades as a Chief Surveyor for California-based Aerial Control Getronics, spending eight years surveying in missile silos in support of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, spanning from North Dakota all the way to Texas. He also led surveying efforts on numerous other key projects all over Southern California. After retiring from surveying, Jacks entrepreneurial spirit led him to open a Home Decor store in Upland, California, with a full-time staff of Interior Designers. After Jack retired for a second time, he decided to leverage his gift of being persuasive, and became a realtor, selling property in the lucrative Southern California real estate market. He was a prominent member of the Upland, California Lions Club, as well as the San Bernardino, California Elks Lodge, of which he was elected the Lodges Exalted Ruler. Jack was also a member of the Franternal Order of Eagles.
After his third retirement in 1993, Jack and Dorothy relocated from California to Lapoint, Utah to make their home. Jack had a life-long dream of being a farmer/rancher and moving to Lapoint enabled him to realize that dream on some level. Jack was a memorable fixture in the Lapoint community; working cattle, irrigating, raising alfalfa, and congregating with a cirlce of close friends almost daily for all-inclusive deliberation of national and international affairs at the Lapoint Store. Jack had a great civic pride in his adpoted hometown, especially The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Lapoint Park, the surrounding mountains, and most of all, the remakable citizenry of Lapoint.
Jack was not an affluent man, but he was a monumentally weathly with the love he felt for others and his community, and the reciprocal love he felt in return. He was an eager, willing, and renowed jokester, with his family and friends and for that matter, everyone he encountered. Jack was imbued with the unique skill to rapidly convert strangers into friends.
Jack was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and endeavored to live his life in service to family, the members of his community, and in harmony with how Jesus would want all of us to live our lives.
Jack is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Richard and Edie Kicenski of Vernal; a son, Bruce and a daugher Jana, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son-in-law, Larry Milam, Chino, California; a sister Bonnie Hoffman, San Diego, California; a brother and sister-in-law, Chuck and Debbie Horner, Manhattan, Kansas; grandchildren; Kim (Tyler) Foote, Todd (Shelby) Kicenski, Kristen Kicenski, Teri (Tony) Ratto, Jason (Darcy) Milam; Great grandchildren; Makayla (Cole), Marisa, Dakota, Braxton, Avery, Isabella, Christopher, Nicolas, and Nathan.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy, an adored daughter of Debbie, his grandson Christopher, his parents, sisters Lois, Jean, and June, a brother John, and numerous brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, and two nephews.
Funeral services for Jack Horner will be held Monday, December 2, 2019 at 11AM at the Lapoint LDS Chapel. A viewing for family and friends will be held Sunday evening from 6-8PM at the Lapoint LDS Chapel, and Monday 9:45-10:45AM also at the Church. Interment will be in the Lapoint Cemetery with Military honors provided by the American Legion Post 11.
Memorials are suggested to the Lapoint Annual 4th of July celebration, which Jack looked forward to with great anticipation, in the care of the Lapoint community activity committe.
