Liesl (Johnson) Leyba

Liesl Leyba, 50, passed away on the 4th of January, 2022. Liesl was born in Granger, Utah, August 29th, 1971 to June and Michael Johnson. She was the oldest of 6 kids. She attended Granger High School where she excelled at volleyball and softball, graduating in 1989. Liesl met Jayme Leyba. They were married in 1994. Jayme and Liesl have two sons, Kalin and Cruz. Liesl loved her boys more than anything and enjoyed participating in all their sports and activities. Liesl was a dedicated fan of University of Utah sports and planned weekends and vacations around games so the family could attend together.

Liesl was a loving aunt to 14 nieces and nephews. She had a gift for teaching and helping kids. She earned a Bachelors of Education degree from Utah State University and was completing her Masters degree. After working as a medical assistant on the Wasatch Front for several years, the family made the move to Vernal in 2001. Liesl embraced the change and said, "I've always wanted to be a teacher!" She went on to teach special education for almost twenty years, with most of those at Vernal Middle School and most recently at Uintah High School. She loved her students.

Liesl is survived by her husband, Jayme of Vernal; sons, Kalin of Salt Lake City and Cruz of Cedar City; parents, June and Michael Johnson of West Valley; siblings, Aaron (Jill) of Las Vegas, Jill Jacobsen (Chad) of Herriman, Tyson (Lauren) of Fresno, CA, Jason (Nicole) of West Jordan, and Holli of West Valley.

A viewing will be held at the Davis Stake Center, 4080 South 2500 East, Vernal, on Friday, January 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 8th, at the same location starting at 2:00 pm, with a viewing from 12:45-1:45 pm.
